AD8HR remote without a Yamaha console

Can AD8HR be remotely controlled by a Windows PC without a Yamaha console?

Yes.
When a NAI48-ES interfaces between AD8HR's AES/EBU output and EtherSound (ES) digital audio network, the NAI48-ES translates a remote control command from ES-Monitor software running on the Windows PC via the ES network, which will be output from RS-422 port on the NAI48-ES to the AD8HRs.

Open the Control tab of the NAI48-ES and check the "AD8HR PC Remote Control" option. Now a new tab named AD8HR is available. Click the tab and control AD8HRs.

The other way may be using a DME unit. The DME interfaces between DME Designer running on a Windows PC and AD8HRs which are connected to the DME with RS-422 serial cable.

(DME Designer V3 Owner's manual, p.213)
"You can connect Yamaha AD824 and AD8HR A/D converters to a DME unit and control them remotely from DME Designer. DME Designer has a component editor for controlling [AD824] and [AD8HR] units.
If you arrange an [AD824] or [AD8HR] from [External Device] in the Zone window, select the connected DME unit in the properties dialog box, and double-click on an [AD824] or [AD8HR] block, the component editor is displayed."

How do you like "Trouble shooting tips"?

I didn't upload a new tip yesterday. It was too busy after coming back from NAB...

We have more product tips but I'd like to start series of Trouble shooting tips now.
Let me know if you have any good idea for trouble shooting.

Set a default MIDI port in the Studio Manager

Is my MIDI port setup able to be saved in the Studio Manager software?

Yes, it is. The port setup on Studio Manager and Editor software won't be remembered in default. But there are two ways to save those setups:
  1. Use the "Set Default" function: when you setup MIDI ports of Studio Manager and System Setup of Editor software, click on the "Set Default" button to save those setups. This works well when you have one console and one computer.
However, if you have several combinations of products, you will see a pop-up window every time you start the program. The Studio Manager looks up all of the ports which were set as "default" when it starts. If the program finds one of those ports not activated, you will have the pop-up window.
  2. Use your default Studio Manager file (.YSM). When you finish setup of Studio Manager and Editor software, store a new YSM file to your desktop from the Studio Manager window (not from the console Editor window). The .YSM file has all MIDI port setup information and console parameters. You can start the program by double clicking the .YSM file next time. The entire port setup will be restored automatically and you will have a chance to select whether all of the data in the file will be uploaded to the console or not. (Of course, you can select an option for downloading data from the console to the program.) You may also have different .YSM files for different combinations of products.

Key-in filter for a dynamics processor

Is there a key-in filter for a dynamics processor on a channel?

(PM1D) Yes, there is a HPF and a LPF for every Gate but no key-in filter for Comp. When you choose a KEY IN 1-4 you may select any post EQ audio signal from an input or output channel as the key-in source. At the time, the channel EQ can be a key-in filter—though the channel will be dedicated to the key-in.

(PM5D) Yes, there is one filter which you can select a type from HPF, LPF or BPF, for every Gate but no key-in filter for Comp. When you choose one of the MIX 21-24 output signals or one of adjacent eight channels' post EQ as a key-in source, the EQ on the source channel can be a key-in filter—though the channel will be dedicated to the key-in.

(M7CL, LS9) Yes, there is one filter which you can select a type from HPF, LPF or BPF, for every DYNAMICS 1 processor with GATE or DUCKING program but no key-in filter for any COMPRESSOR, EXPANDER, and DYNAMICS 2 processor. When you choose one of the MIX 13-16 output signals or one of the adjacent eight channels' post EQ as a key-in source, the EQ on the source channel can be a key-in filter—though the channel will be dedicated to the key-in.

(DM/0) No, there is not. When you choose one of MIX 1-12 output signals as a key-in source, the EQ on the MIX channel can be a key-in filter—though the MIX will be dedicated to the key-in. You can also choose one of the adjacent 12 channels as a key-in source; those signals are pre GATE -- pre EQ.

Scene Protection

How would I protect my Scene?

In the Scene window, there is a "PROTECT" option next to the scene name. Enabling this will protect a scene from being overwritten when attempting to store another scene onto it. However, it will be overwritten by loading a file from a storage device or deleted by initializing the console.

(PM5D V2 and LS9 only) You will be able to make a "READ ONLY" scene. This will not be overwritten by loading a file from a PCMCIA memory device or USB memory but will be overwritten by loading a scene from Studio Manager via USB or Ethernet port and/or initializing the console.
This "READ ONLY" setting can be selected only for consecutive scene numbers from scene number 000.

MONITOR and/or CUE master fader

Can I have a MONITOR and/or CUE master fader on the console?

(PM1D, M7CL) Yes, but you need external wiring. Please refer to "PM1D Short-Cut List" or "M7CL Short-cut List" (or refer to "Monitor Mix on M7CL").

(PM5D) Yes. With version 2 firmware, you can assign MONITOR or CUE master level control to STEREO A or B master fader.

(LS9) Yes. Monitor Master fader can be assigned to CUSTOM FADER layer. MONITOR ON MASTER FADER function is also available for User Defined Keys. If this is on, you can use the master fader to control the monitor level, and the ON key to switch the monitor output on/off.

Grouping channels with DCA

Using DCAs, can a grouped signal be sent to the Matrix?

No, it cannot. By using DCAs, you can make a group of control for those faders. DCAs are not making an audio group but a group of level control.
These audio signals have to be mixed on a MIX bus in order to send a group of audio signals to any Matrix.

Setup guide for DSP5D

On the YamahaProAudio.com, There is a pdf file which we are referring to in PM5D advanced school to setup the DSP5D hands-on system.
When you get your DSP5D for your system, please refer to the document. The owner's manual doesn't describe so much about this procedure, step by step.

VARI to FIXED on one channel only

Can a MIX bus be changed from VARI to FIXED on one INPUT channel only?

(PM1D, PM5D, M7CL, LS9) No, it cannot. The bus setup is global for all input channels.

(DM/0) No, it cannot. AUX can be used as GROUP by changing its mode to FIXED. But, the mode is global for all input channels.
Note:
VARI (Variable) = AUX
FIXED = GROUP

Format a storage device on the console

Can I format a storage device on the console?

(PM1D, PM5D) No, you cannot. When you format the PCMCIA storage device from the PC for those consoles, use FAT16. (PM1D: FAT12 is also available.)

(M7CL, LS9) Yes, you can. The M7CL and the LS9 can handle FAT32, FAT16, or FAT12 file systems; if you format the storage device from the console it will be formatted as FAT16. Long file names are not supported. Operation is guaranteed only for USB flash memory that is no larger than 2 GB.
Note:
A partitioned USB flash memory is not supported.

(DM2000) Yes, you can. We strongly recommend that you format the storage device on the console.

Channel copy in Studio Manager

Is Channel Copy available in the Studio Manager?

Yes. The PM5D V2/DSP5D Editor software has the function. (PM5DV2/DSP5D Editor Owner's manual, p.6)
"The Ch Copy/Ch Paste function copies or pastes the channel that is selected by the [SELECT] button (or [SEL] key.)
Copy can also be executed by using the keyboard’s Ctrl key + C key. Paste can also be executed by using the keyboard’s Ctrl key + V key.
Since the Undo data is cleared when you execute Ch Paste, Undo will become unavailable at that point."

M7CL and LS9 Editor don't have the Copy function but the Channel Link function can imitate it.
1. Setup a channel as a source channel.
2. Open the Channel Link page and select parameters you want to copy to the other channels.
3. Create a new Channel Link group between the source and the destination channels by starting from the source channel.
4. The parameters are copied to the destination channels.
5. Clear the Channel Link between those channels.

PM5D V2 Editor with Intel Mac

Please make sure to use Rosetta.

From the release note on the download page.
"It is now compatible with Studio Manager V2.2.1 on Macintosh computers. However, if you are using Intel Mac, you will need to use Studio Manager via Rosetta. (Please refer to the following site. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303120)"

Two operators on the system

Can I have a selected channel window on my laptop which is independent from the selected channel on the mixing console surface?
We have two operators on the system. The first operator is working on the console and the second operator is on the laptop. Both of them have the same channel on the Selected Channel area and Selected Channel window. Each of them needs to have a different channel to operate independently.

Try "Additional View" of the Selected Channel window. The selected channel on the Additional View is changed only when you change it on the window.
Tips:
Double-click the channels number with holding down the Ctrl key to open the additional window.

Access to the EQ/Dynamics and other Libraries is only available from Main View.
